अथ प्रथमोऽध्यायः ।
श्रीराजोवाच।
समः प्रियः सुहृद्ब्रह्मन्भूतानां भगवान्स्वयम्।
इन्द्र स्यार्थे कथं दैत्यानवधीद्विषमो यथा १।
राजा परीक्षित्ने पूछा-भगवन्! भगवान् तो स्वभावसे ही भेदभावसे रहित हैं—सम हैं, समस्त प्राणियोंके प्रिय और सुहृद् हैं; फिर उन्होंने, जैसे कोई साधारण मनुष्य भेदभावसे अपने मित्रका पक्ष ले और शत्रुओंका अनिष्ट करे, उसी प्रकार इन्द्रके लिये दैत्योंका वध क्यों किया? ||१||
The king Parikshit asked – Oh Lord! God is by nature free from discrimination—He is equal, dear to all beings, and benevolent. Then, just as an ordinary human being, by discrimination, takes the side of his friend and harms his enemies, In the same way, why was the killing of the demons done for Indra? ||1||
