(Shri Ganesh Ji Ki Aarti)
“जय गणेश जय गणेश जय गणेश देवा” is the most universally recognised aarti in Hindu devotional tradition. It is sung at the beginning of every puja and every auspicious occasion — because in Sanatan Dharma, Lord Ganesha is always worshipped first (Pratham Pujya) before any other deity or endeavour. The aarti beautifully encapsulates Ganesha’s divine form, his compassionate nature, and the miraculous blessings he bestows upon his devotees.
Composer & Origin
This beloved aarti is traditionally attributed to poet-saint Surdas — as indicated by the verse “सूर श्याम शरण आए, सफल कीजे सेवा” which carries the poet’s signature (bhanjika). It is composed in simple, musical Hindi in the Braj Bhasha tradition, making it easy to memorise and sing for devotees of all ages across India and the world.
Famous Singers
This aarti has been rendered by virtually every major devotional singer in India. The most celebrated versions include those by Lata Mangeshkar, Anuradha Paudwal, Suresh Wadkar, Hariharan, Shankar Mahadevan and Udit Narayan. It is also the signature aarti of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations across Maharashtra, Gujarat and across India.
Deity — Lord Ganesha
Lord Ganesha — also known as Ganapati, Vinayaka, Vighnaharta and Lambodara — is the elephant-headed son of Lord Shiva (Mahadeva) and Goddess Parvati. He is the lord of beginnings, the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts, sciences and wisdom, and the deity of intellect and new ventures. बप्पा की पूजा से मनुष्य को यश, वैभव और ज्ञान की प्राप्ति होती है — worship of Bappa brings fame, prosperity and knowledge.
Divine Form of Ganesha — As Described in the Aarti
The aarti beautifully describes Lord Ganesha’s sacred form:
(Ek Dant)** — The single-tusked one, symbolising one-pointedness and focus
(Dayavant)** — Full of compassion for all beings
(Char Bhuja Dhari)** — Bearer of four arms, each holding divine symbols
(Mathe Sindoor Sohe)** — Sacred vermilion adorns his forehead
(Muse Ki Savari)** — His vehicle (vahana) is the mouse — symbolising the conquest of ego
Verse by Verse Significance
Victory to Lord Ganesha — whose mother is Goddess Parvati and whose father is Lord Mahadeva (Shiva). This opening verse establishes Ganesha’s divine lineage — born of the highest Shakti (Parvati) and the supreme Shiva.
You have a single tusk and are filled with compassion, bearing four hands. Sindoor adorns your forehead and you ride upon the mouse. Each element has deep symbolic meaning — the single tusk represents sacrifice (Ganesha broke his own tusk to write the Mahabharata for Sage Vyasa), and the mouse represents mastery over the smallest and most persistent of desires.
Betel leaves, flowers and dry fruits are offered to Ganesha, along with his beloved modak/laddoo. Saints and devotees perform his service with love. This verse tells us exactly what offerings please Ganesha — simple, sweet and pure.
He gives sight to the blind, health to the diseased, a son to the childless, and wealth to the poor. This verse establishes Ganesha as the fulfiller of all sincere prayers — there is no wish too great or too small for his divine grace.
The poet-saint Surdas humbly offers his service and prays that Ganesha make his devotion fruitful. This closing verse carries the poet’s personal surrender to the Lord.
