About श्री हनुमान चालीसा (Shri Hanuman Chalisa)

श्री हनुमान चालीसा is the most beloved and universally recited devotional composition in the Hindu tradition. It is a garland of 40 verses (two dohas + 40 chaupais + one final doha) that sing the praise of Lord Hanuman — Sankat Mochan, the remover of all obstacles and the eternal devotee of Lord Ram.

Composer
Shri Hanuman Chalisa was composed by Goswami Tulsidas (1532–1623 CE) — the great Bhakti saint, philosopher and poet who also authored the Ramcharitmanas. Traditional belief holds that Tulsidas composed the Chalisa during a period of great personal difficulty and illness — and through his devotion to Hanuman, he found healing, strength and divine grace.

Language
The Chalisa is composed in Awadhi — the everyday spoken language of the people of Uttar Pradesh in that era. Tulsidas deliberately chose Awadhi over classical Sanskrit so that devotion would not be limited to scholars and priests alone, but could be read, memorised and recited by every man, woman and child.

Famous Singers
A rendition of Hanuman Chalisa sung by Hariharan became the first devotional song on YouTube to cross 5 billion views in November 2025. Other celebrated renditions include those by Lata Mangeshkar, Gulshan Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan (who recorded it in chorus with twenty other singers in 2011), Shankar Mahadevan, Udit Narayan and Anuradha Paudwal.

Deity
Lord Hanuman — son of Vayu (the Wind God) and Anjana, devoted servant of Lord Shri Ram, and one of the Chiranjivis (immortal beings) of Sanatan Dharma. He is the embodiment of Shakti (strength), Bhakti (devotion), Gyan (wisdom) and Seva (selfless service).

Structure of the Chalisa
– **2 Opening Dohas** — Prayer to the Guru and invocation of Hanuman
– **40 Chaupais** — Verses describing Hanuman’s appearance, qualities and divine deeds
– **1 Closing Doha** — Prayer for Hanuman to reside in the devotee’s heart

Key themes across the 40 verses include:
– Hanuman’s golden complexion and divine appearance
– His role as the messenger and servant of Lord Ram
– His feat of crossing the ocean and finding Mata Sita in Lanka
– His burning of Lanka and victory over Ravana’s armies
– His rescue of Lakshman using the Sanjeevani herb
– His presence at every Ram katha — past, present and future
– Shiva’s personal testimony to the power of the Chalisa

Spiritual Significance
The Hanuman Chalisa is believed to remove obstacles, fear, negative energies and planetary doshas. Chanting it daily brings protection, peace, energy and spiritual upliftment. It is also said to mitigate the adverse effects of Saturn (Shani) — which is why it is especially recited on Saturdays.

Benefits of Reciting Hanuman Chalisa
– Removes fear, anxiety and negative energy
– Provides divine protection from evil forces
– Builds courage, confidence and inner strength
– Improves concentration and mental clarity
– Removes Shani dosha and planetary obstacles
– Fulfils sincere wishes and prayers
– Leads the devotee toward liberation (Moksha)

One who recites the Chalisa a hundred times is released from all bondages and attains great bliss — as Tulsidas himself writes in the closing verses, with Lord Shiva as the witness.

When to Recite
– Daily during morning puja after bath
– Every Tuesday and Saturday — most auspicious days for Hanuman worship
– On Hanuman Jayanti — the birth anniversary of Lord Hanuman
– During Sundarkand path and Ram katha
– Any time of fear, difficulty or stress — even a single recitation brings peace
– Before important work, exams or travel for protection and success

Correct Method of Recitation
1. Take a bath and wear clean clothes
2. Sit facing east or north
3. Light a diya (oil lamp) with mustard oil
4. Offer red flowers — especially marigold or hibiscus
5. Light incense (dhoop/agarbatti)
6. Recite with full concentration and devotion
7. Read slowly — do not rush
8. Conclude with Aarti of Hanuman Ji
