Chhath Puja — Vrat Katha, Puja Vidhi and Significance
Introduction to Chhath Puja
Chhath Puja, also known as Chhath Mahaparv, Surya Shashthi and Chhath Vrat, is a sacred Hindu festival dedicated primarily to Lord Surya (the Sun God) and worship associated with Chhathi Maiya, or Goddess Shashthi.
The festival is especially prominent in Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh and parts of Nepal. It is a four-day observance marked by purity, discipline, fasting, prayer and offerings to the Sun. One of the most distinctive features of Chhath is that devotees offer Arghya to the setting Sun as well as to the rising Sun.
Devotees observe the festival with prayers for family well-being, health, prosperity, harmony and the welfare of children.
When is Chhath Puja Celebrated?
The main Chhath Puja is observed on Kartik Shukla Shashthi, the sixth lunar day of the bright fortnight of the Hindu month of Kartik.
The complete observance traditionally extends over four days:
- Nahay Khay
- Kharna
- Sandhya Arghya
- Usha Arghya and Paran
Chhath is also observed in the form of Chaiti Chhath during the month of Chaitra.
Four Days of Chhath Puja
Day 1 — Nahay Khay
The first day is known as Nahay Khay.
The devotee takes a ritual bath and cleans the home and worship area. A simple, pure vegetarian meal is prepared and consumed according to family tradition.
Traditional food associated with Nahay Khay includes rice, gram dal and pumpkin preparation.
The day marks the beginning of the spiritual discipline and purification associated with Chhath.
Day 2 — Kharna
The second day is called Kharna.
The devotee observes a fast during the day and performs worship in the evening. After the worship, the Kharna offering is prepared and offered to the deity.
Traditional Kharna offerings include jaggery-based kheer, roti and fruits, although practices may vary according to family and regional tradition.
After Kharna, the rigorous fasting period continues until the Usha Arghya on the following morning.
Day 3 — Sandhya Arghya
The third day is dedicated to Sandhya Arghya, the evening offering.
Devotees prepare the traditional offerings and arrange them in bamboo baskets and soops. Families then go to a riverbank, pond, ghat or another clean water body.
At sunset, the devotees stand in the water and offer Arghya to the setting Sun while praying to Lord Surya and Chhathi Maiya.
Traditional offerings may include Thekua, rice-flour sweets, fruits, coconut and sugarcane, along with other locally customary items.
Some families also observe the tradition of Kosi Bharna after the evening Arghya. This practice varies according to regional and family traditions.
Day 4 — Usha Arghya and Paran
The fourth and final day begins before sunrise.
Devotees return to the Chhath ghat and wait for sunrise. When the Sun rises, they offer Usha Arghya to Lord Surya.
After the offering and prayers, the devotee completes the fast through Paran, according to their family tradition. Prasad is then shared with family members, relatives, neighbours and other devotees.
This completes the four-day Chhath Mahaparv.

Chhath Vrat Katha
The Story of King Priyavrata and Goddess Shashthi
One of the most widely circulated traditional stories associated with Chhath is the story of King Priyavrata and Goddess Shashthi. Different regional and religious traditions preserve variations of this story, so it is best presented as a traditional or popular religious account rather than as the only version of Chhath’s origin.
According to the traditional account, King Priyavrata and his wife Malini wished deeply for a child. Despite their prayers and efforts, they remained without children for a long time.
Following the guidance of sages, a sacred ritual was performed for the couple. As a result, Queen Malini gave birth to a child, but the child was born lifeless.
The king was overcome with grief and became extremely distressed because of the loss of his child.
At that moment, a divine goddess appeared before him. She introduced herself as Goddess Shashthi, who is affectionately worshipped by devotees as Chhathi Maiya.
The Goddess instructed the king to worship her with devotion and observe her sacred fast.
King Priyavrata followed the Goddess’s instructions and worshipped her with faith and devotion. According to the traditional story, through the grace of Goddess Shashthi, his child was restored to life.
This story is one of the reasons Chhathi Maiya is traditionally associated with the protection and well-being of children, family welfare and blessings for devotees.
The story has therefore become an important part of the devotional tradition surrounding Chhath Puja.
Significance of Chhath Puja
Chhath is not only a religious observance but also a festival expressing gratitude toward the Sun, nature, water and the forces that sustain life.
The festival emphasizes:
- Worship of Lord Surya
- Respect for nature and water
- Cleanliness and purity
- Self-discipline and devotion
- Prayers for family welfare
- Blessings for children and loved ones
- Gratitude toward the setting Sun
- Community participation at the Chhath ghats
The Government of Bihar describes Chhath as a festival associated with the Sun’s life-giving power, cleanliness, nature and spiritual discipline.
