Popular Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha — The Story of Veeravati
One of the most widely narrated Karwa Chauth stories is the traditional story of Veeravati.
According to the popular story, Veeravati was the beloved daughter of a wealthy merchant and had several brothers who deeply cared for her. After her marriage, she observed the Karwa Chauth fast with the intention of praying for the long life and well-being of her husband.
As the day progressed, Veeravati became extremely weak because of hunger and thirst. Her brothers became worried when they saw her suffering and wanted her to end the fast.
According to the traditional tale, the brothers created an artificial appearance of moonrise using a light and a sieve. Veeravati believed that the Moon had risen. She performed the customary worship and ended her fast.
The story then describes an unfortunate turn of events, with a serious crisis affecting her husband. Veeravati was heartbroken and prayed sincerely to the divine powers for her husband’s well-being.
Moved by her devotion and repentance, the Goddess guided her to observe the Karwa Chauth fast properly. Veeravati followed the prescribed observance with sincere faith and prayed for her husband’s welfare.
The traditional story emphasizes that fasting is not merely about physical endurance; it also represents faith, discipline, devotion, sincerity and commitment.
Karwa Chauth Prayer
O Goddess Parvati,
please bless my family with Your grace.
May my husband be blessed with good health, happiness and a long life.
May love, trust and harmony always remain in our married life.
May our home be filled with peace, prosperity and happiness.
O Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati,
bless us with devotion, wisdom and righteousness.
Om Namah Shivaya.
