Dhanteras Puja, Katha and Vidhi

Introduction to Dhanteras

Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi, is an important Hindu festival and marks the beginning of the traditional five-day Diwali celebrations. It is observed on the Trayodashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik.

On this day, devotees worship Lord Dhanvantari, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera. In many traditions, a special lamp known as Yama Deepam is also lit for Lord Yama.

Dhanteras is not only associated with wealth and prosperity. It is also connected with health, longevity, happiness, peace and spiritual well-being.

Lord Dhanvantari is particularly associated with Ayurveda and healing traditions. According to the famous Samudra Manthan tradition, Lord Dhanvantari emerged from the cosmic ocean carrying the pot of Amrita. Therefore, Dhanteras is also considered an auspicious occasion to pray for good health and long life.

One of the important Dhanteras traditions is Yama Deepam.

In many traditions, a lamp is lit outside the home in the evening and dedicated to Lord Yama. It is traditionally associated with prayers for longevity and protection from untimely death.

The exact method and placement of the lamp may differ according to regional and family customs.

Dhanteras Katha — Lord Dhanvantari and Samudra Manthan

One of the most important traditional stories associated with Dhanteras is the appearance of Lord Dhanvantari during the Samudra Manthan, or churning of the cosmic ocean.

According to the traditional account, the Devas and Asuras churned the ocean in their search for Amrita, the divine nectar of immortality. During this cosmic event, many extraordinary objects and divine beings emerged.

Lord Dhanvantari appeared carrying a pot of Amrita.

Lord Dhanvantari is traditionally associated with Ayurveda, healing and medicine. His appearance with the Amrita Kalash is one of the reasons Dhanteras is associated with health and longevity.

The story teaches that true wealth is not limited to material possessions. Good health, longevity, wisdom, contentment and righteous living are also forms of wealth.

Popular Dhanteras Lakshmi Katha

A popular traditional folk story associated with Dhanteras tells of a hardworking farmer who was devoted to Goddess Lakshmi.

The farmer lived honestly and earned his livelihood through hard work. At one point, his family faced financial difficulties. Despite these challenges, he continued to follow the path of honesty and sincere effort.

On Dhanteras, he lit lamps and worshipped Goddess Lakshmi with devotion. Instead of praying only for material wealth, he prayed for the health, happiness and prosperity of his family.

According to the folk tradition, Goddess Lakshmi blessed the farmer’s household with prosperity.

The message of the story is that true prosperity is supported not only by wealth but also by hard work, honesty, devotion, contentment and good deeds.

Note: Different regions preserve different Dhanteras stories and versions of Lakshmi-related folk narratives. Such stories should therefore be understood as traditional or regional accounts rather than as one universally identical scriptural narrative.

Dhanteras Vrat and Observance Vidhi

A strict fast is not universally required for everyone on Dhanteras. Many families observe the festival through Puja, devotional activities, charity, vegetarian or Sattvic food and lamp-lighting rituals.

If a family tradition includes fasting:

  1. Take a bath in the morning and make a Sankalp.
  2. Maintain a devotional and disciplined routine throughout the day.
  3. Remember Lord Dhanvantari, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera.
  4. Perform the evening Puja according to tradition.
  5. Light the Yama Deepam.
  6. Take Prasad after the Puja.

People who are pregnant, elderly, medically unwell or have other health considerations should avoid an unsafe fast and follow appropriate health guidance.

What Is Considered Auspicious to Buy on Dhanteras?

Many Indian families consider the following purchases auspicious on Dhanteras:

  • Gold
  • Silver
  • Jewellery
  • New utensils
  • Puja articles
  • Useful household items
  • Business-related equipment

In some traditions, buying a broom on Dhanteras is also considered auspicious because it symbolizes cleanliness and the removal of unwanted negativity from the home.

These practices are traditional beliefs and can vary between families and regions.

Dhanteras Prayer

O Goddess Lakshmi,
please bless our home with happiness, peace and prosperity.

O Lord Dhanvantari,
bless us with good health and long life.

O Lord Kubera,
grant us the wisdom to use wealth responsibly and righteously.

May illness, sorrow and negativity leave our home.
May our lives always be filled with wisdom, contentment, devotion and righteousness.

Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah.
Om Dhanvantaraye Namah.

Spiritual Significance of Dhanteras

Dhanteras reminds us that the greatest wealth is not limited to money or material possessions.

Good health, family love, peace of mind, wisdom, contentment and righteous conduct are also precious forms of wealth.

The Diya lit on Dhanteras represents the movement from darkness toward light. Worship of Goddess Lakshmi represents the aspiration for prosperity accompanied by wisdom and righteous living.

The message of Dhanteras is to remain healthy, content, hardworking and truthful, and to use prosperity wisely for the good of oneself, one’s family and society.

Note: Dhanteras Puja, Yama Deepam, fasting and purchasing traditions differ across regions and families. The Puja Muhurat should always be followed according to the local Panchang.
