Diwali Puja, Katha and Vidhi

Introduction to Diwali

Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most widely celebrated Hindu festivals in India and around the world. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance and positivity over negativity.

On the main Diwali day, which falls on the Amavasya Tithi of Kartik, devotees traditionally worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha. In many traditions, Lord Kubera is also worshipped. Homes, temples and businesses are decorated with lamps, and prayers are offered for happiness, prosperity, peace and well-being.

The religious meaning of Diwali varies across different regions of India. In North Indian traditions, the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya is especially associated with Diwali. Other traditions place greater emphasis on Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Vishnu, Lord Krishna or other religious narratives and rituals.

Lakshmi Puja is traditionally performed during Pradosh Kaal. For Lucknow, the 2026 Lakshmi Puja Muhurat is listed as 5:42 PM to 7:39 PM. The exact timing differs by city, so the local Panchang should be checked before performing the Puja.

Families clean and decorate their homes, light Diyas, perform Puja, give gifts and sweets, and spend time with relatives and loved ones.

Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped for prosperity and abundance, while Lord Ganesha is worshipped for wisdom, auspicious beginnings and the removal of obstacles.

Family members can listen with devotion and pray for happiness, prosperity and well-being.

12. Perform Aarti

Distribute Prasad among all family members after the Aarti.

Diwali Katha — Lord Rama’s Return to Ayodhya

One of the most famous traditional narratives associated with Diwali is the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya.

According to the Ramayana tradition, Lord Rama completed fourteen years of exile while following his father’s promise. During his exile, he faced many challenges and lived in the forest with Goddess Sita and Lord Lakshmana.

After Ravana, the king of Lanka, abducted Sita, Lord Rama travelled toward Lanka with the help of the Vanara army. After the great battle, Lord Rama defeated Ravana and rescued Sita.

Lord Rama, Sita and Lakshmana then returned to Ayodhya.

According to the traditional account, the people of Ayodhya welcomed their beloved prince by lighting rows of lamps throughout the city. The entire city was illuminated and celebrations filled the kingdom.

This tradition is one of the major North Indian explanations for celebrating Diwali as the return of Lord Rama and the victory of light over darkness and righteousness over evil.

Diwali Lakshmi Puja Katha

A popular Lakshmi Puja tradition associates Diwali with the worship of Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and abundance.

On the night of Diwali, devotees clean their homes and illuminate them with lamps before welcoming Goddess Lakshmi through devotional worship.

According to traditional belief, a clean, illuminated and well-maintained home represents auspiciousness and readiness to receive divine blessings.

The deeper purpose of Lakshmi Puja is not simply to seek money. Devotees pray for prosperity accompanied by good health, wisdom, peace, contentment and righteous conduct.

Note: Different regions preserve different Lakshmi-related stories and Diwali traditions. Therefore, the Katha and Puja procedure may vary between communities and families.

Diwali Vrat and Observance Vidhi

A strict fast is not universally required for everyone on Diwali. Many families observe the festival through Puja, devotional activities, Sattvic food, charity and lamp-lighting.

If fasting is part of a family’s tradition:

  1. Take a bath and make a Sankalp in the morning.
  2. Maintain a disciplined and devotional routine throughout the day.
  3. Remember Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi.
  4. Perform Lakshmi-Ganesha Puja in the evening.
  5. Light Diyas.
  6. Read or listen to the Katha and perform Aarti.
  7. Take Prasad after the Puja.

People who are pregnant, elderly, medically unwell or have other health concerns should avoid an unsafe fast.

Lighting Diyas on Diwali

Lighting earthen Diyas is one of the most beautiful traditions of Diwali.

Diyas may be placed at the entrance of the home, in the Puja area, courtyard, windows, balcony and other auspicious places.

The light of the Diya represents the removal of darkness and the awakening of knowledge, hope and goodness.

Charity and Good Deeds on Diwali

Helping people in need, offering food, donating clothes and giving according to one’s capacity are considered meaningful ways of observing Diwali.

The festival becomes even more meaningful when the light of Diwali extends beyond one’s own home and brings happiness and hope to someone who needs it.

Diwali Prayer

O Goddess Lakshmi,
please bless our home with happiness, peace and prosperity.

O Lord Ganesha,
remove obstacles from our lives and bless us with wisdom.

O Lord Vishnu,
keep the light of righteousness and truth alive in our lives.

Bless our family with good health, love and happiness.

May darkness, ignorance, ego and negativity leave our lives.

May knowledge, compassion, contentment and righteousness illuminate our hearts.

Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah.
Om Gam Ganapataye Namah.

Spiritual Significance of Diwali

The deeper message of Diwali is to remove both external and internal darkness.

The Diya inspires us to move toward knowledge. Lakshmi Puja reminds us that prosperity should be accompanied by wisdom and contentment. Ganesha Puja reminds us of the importance of intelligence, discrimination and auspicious beginnings.

Diwali teaches that true prosperity is not limited to money. Health, knowledge, love, family, contentment, service and righteous living are also forms of wealth.

Light a Diya, remove darkness and spread the light of knowledge, love and harmony in your life.

Shubh Deepavali!
