Sati ji understood the divine glory of Shri Raghuveer, and out of fear, She concealed the truth from Lord Shiv. She responded, “O’ Lord of the senses, I did not test Lord Ram. Like you, I merely paid my obeisance to Him.”
She said, “Whatever you have said cannot be untrue. I hold this firm belief in my heart.” Hearing this, Lord Shiv entered deep meditation, where He witnessed all of Sati ji’s actions and understood everything.
In His heart, Shiv ji bowed to the illusory energy of Lord Ram, which had led Sati ji to conceal the truth. “What has been preordained by the will of Lord Hari must come to pass,” the all-wise Lord Shambhu reflected within Himself.
Sati ji had disguised Herself as Sita ji, and this deeply pained Lord Shiv’s heart. He thought to Himself, “Showing affection toward Sati now will not only be unjust and unwise, but will also undermine the sanctity of the path of devotion…
…Sati is exceedingly chaste, and I cannot simply abandon Her, yet to continue loving Her as a wife now would be a great sin.” Although Lord Shiv did not voice these thoughts, His heart was filled with immense agony.
Lord Shankar then meditated upon His supreme Lord, Shri Ram, and bowed at His lotus feet. A thought arose in His heart that He could not accept Sati ji (as His wife) in Her current body. Resolving this within Himself, Lord Shiv silently took a solemn vow.
With this thought in mind, the serene and composed Lord Shankar began His journey back to Kailash, His abode, with His heart and mind firmly fixed on Shri Raghuveer. As He started walking, a sweet, divine voice resonated from the heavens: “O’ Lord Mahesh, glory to you! Your devotion is truly unwavering…
…No one else can take a vow like you. You are a true devotee of Lord Ram, as well as the all-capable and Almighty God.” Hearing the celestial voice, Sati ji felt a deep sense of worry in Her heart. With hesitation, She asked Lord Shiv,…
…“O’ Kind Lord, please tell me, what vow have You taken? You are the abode of truth and ever gracious to the humble.” Despite Sati ji’s repeated pleas and questions in various ways, Lord Shiv, the destroyer of Tripur (the three cities of the demon brothers), remained silent and said nothing.
Sati ji realized in Her heart that the all-knowing Lord Shiv must have understood everything. She thought to Herself, “I have acted deceitfully with Lord Shambhu. A woman, by nature, is simply foolish and ignorant.”
Consider the nice quality of love that even water, when mixed with milk, becomes indistinguishable and is sold as milk. However, all the sweetness disappears and the bond between water and milk breaks when cunningness, akin to something sour, is added to the milk, separating the two.
Sati ji felt deeply troubled in Her heart as She reflected on Her actions, and Her boundless worry was beyond description. She realized that Lord Shiv, being the supreme and unfathomable ocean of mercy, had chosen not to openly speak of Her misdeed.
Seeing the expression on Lord Shankar’s face, Goddess Bhawani (Sati ji) understood that Her Lord had inwardly abandoned Her, which filled Her heart with worry. Realizing the gravity of Her sinful act, She found Herself unable to speak, but Her heart burned intensely with regret and anguish, like a potter’s oven.
Lord Shiv, whose flag bears the symbol of a bull, understood Sati ji’s distress. To console and uplift Her, He began narrating beautiful and enchanting tales. Along the way, He recounted many historical stories, and in this manner, Lord Vishwanath eventually reached Kailash.
There, Lord Shambhu recalled His vow and sat beneath the Banyan tree in lotus posture. Taking on His innate divine form, Lord Shankar immersed Himself in an unbroken and infinite state of samadhi (trance).
Sati ji continued to live at Kailash, burdened with deep anxiety in Her heart. The secret of Her inner turmoil remained unknown to anyone, and each day felt as long as an era to Her.
Each day, a new worry weighs on Sati ji’s heart. She wonders when She will be able to cross this vast ocean of sorrow. She reflects, “I have insulted Shri Ram and doubted my husband’s words, considering them to be untrue…
…The Creator has handed me the consequences I rightfully deserve for my actions; whatever was justified has been delivered to me. But, O’ God, it is unfair that You still keep me alive when Lord Shankar has distanced Himself from me.”
The guilt weighing on Sati ji’s heart was indescribable. The wise Sati ji meditated upon Lord Ram in Her heart and said, “O’ Lord, if you are truly known as the compassionate saviour of the distressed, the One who alleviates all suffering, as the Vedas glorify You…
…then with folded hands, I humbly pray to You, if the pledge of my love for the feet of Lord Shiv is true in thought, word, and deed, may I quickly be freed from this mortal body.
…O’ Omniscient Lord, hear my plea, please devise a way for my death to come effortlessly so that this unbearable grief may finally be lifted.”
Thus, the daughter of Daksh Prajapati, Sati ji, was consumed by sorrow, and Her deep agony was indescribable and beyond measure. After 87,000 years had passed, the eternal Lord Shambhu emerged from His samadhi (meditative state).
Lord Shiv began chanting the name of Shri Ram, and upon hearing this, Sati ji realized that the Master of the world, Shiv ji, had awakened from His samadhi. She approached Lord Shambhu, bowed at His feet in reverence, and Lord Shankar graciously offered Her a seat before Him.
Lord Shiv began narrating the sweet and divine tales of Lord Hari. Meanwhile, at the same time, Daksh was appointed as a Prajapati (the master of all living beings). Lord Brahma, recognizing Daksh as fully qualified in every respect, thoughtfully appointed him as the Chief of all the Prajapatis.
When Daksh attained this high position and authority, his heart became filled with false pride. In this world, there is hardly anyone who does not become intoxicated with arrogance after gaining power.
Daksh summoned many sages and began preparations for a grand sacrifice (yajna). He respectfully sent invitations to all the Demigods who were entitled to a share of the sacrificial offerings.
The Kinnars, Nags, Siddhas, Gandharvas, and Demigods, along with their wives, all attended the yajna. Except for Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma, and Lord Mahesh, all the other Demigods adorned their celestial aircrafts and departed for the grand religious ritual.
Sati ji saw numerous exquisite aeroplanes soaring through the sky. Aboard these celestial vehicles, enchanting celestial damsels sang melodious songs so captivating that their sound could disturb even the deep meditation of sages who heard them.
When Sati ji inquired, Lord Shiv informed her about Her father’s yajna. Hearing this, Sati ji’s heart filled up with joy. She began thinking, “If Lord Shiv grants me permission, I can use this as an excuse to visit and stay there for a few days.”
Sati ji was deeply saddened by the distance from Her husband, but reflecting on Her mistake, She hesitated to say anything. Unable to resist any longer, she finally spoke in a loving manner, Her words sweet and pleasing to the heart, yet laced with fear and apprehension.
“O’ Lord, there is a grand celebration taking place at my father’s home. If you grant me permission, O’ Abode of mercy, I would like to go there respectfully to witness it.”
The Bal Lila prakarana of Balkanda is among the most beloved sections of the Ramcharitmanas. It deals with the divine childhood of Lord Ram — his first steps, his playful antics, the joy of his parents, and the wonder of the citizens of Ayodhya who witness these acts.
Goswami Tulsidas chose to include these episodes to highlight the concept of vatsalya bhakti — devotion in the mood of a parent. In this form of devotion, the devotee sees God not as the supreme master but as their own beloved child, to be pampered, protected, and delighted in.
The famous verse "ठुमकि चलत रामचंद्र बाजत पैजनियाँ" (Thumaki chalat Ramachandra, bajat paijaniyaan) captures the divine child Ram toddling with his anklets ringing — an image so tender that it has been set to music and sung across India for centuries.
